Chapter 10

Weds 4th July 2018

It was the end of Independence Day and Tara, me and the girls had been enjoying an amazing week.

Maria and Marla had returned from my parent’s late on Sunday, fully tired out by the day they’d spent with my folks. A day spent immersed in nature courtesy of my mom, the girls had loved the time spent learning the names of flowers, birds and woodland creatures with their beloved Nonna. This had stimulated and entertained their minds, just as all the walking and fresh air had tired them out. A bath and toothbrushing all they had the energy for, too tired even to want a single bedtime story.

We’d both taken the week off work – four days got us a week with the Wednesday Independence Day celebrations. Monday and Tuesday we’d headed up state with the girls and looked on proudly as we pretended we didn’t know the names of all the plants and wildlife they proudly parroted back to us. The quality of their young memories truly impressive, only the occasional mispronunciation from their young mouths, including the complex Latin names that their dumbo father still struggled with. Thank goodness they’d taken more after Tara when it came to schooling and their passion for reading.

Wednesday had brought us back to town for a big family gathering at my folk’s place. I honestly couldn’t count how many people were in the yard. With Joel and me and the families of our five sisters, the place was swarming with grandchildren and was a buzz of squealing laughter and happy, alcohol-tinged adult conversation.

I’d thought it might be a little awkward between Joel and Tara, with him knowing our guilty secret, but he was gracious and understanding and I never got the sense he was anything less than supportive and loving. Recognizing in our dilemma the kind of difficulties that all couples sometimes encounter – the only difference being that some are open about it and that others still go through it but choose to hide things.

It was an all-day event, a typical Italian American family gathering. Plenty of food, plenty of wine and beer, and plenty to keep the grandkids happy and occupied. Bouncy castle, pool, assorted organized games combining with Nickelodeon for when they needed a rest.

Tara’s parents even dropped in for a while to say hi. Ever since Tara and I had started dating, they’d always been friendly with my own folks. Which was just as well as they both wanted as much time as they could with the twins, as they put it, ‘making the most of them while we’re still healthy and they’re still interested’. They had a point, their sixth birthdays had just been and went in mid-June and Tara and I had gotten a bit teary about how quickly they were growing up. Before we knew it, Elementary School would give way to High School. Then there ’d be friends and boys and college.

Our two sets of parents were right to make the most of them now, while the stars were all aligned.
